Yard Bugs Coming Out In Full Force

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – John Goldsmith’s backyard is under attack.

“It’s squishy here, you can see the earth moving,” said Goldsmith, 56, Cedar Rapids.

He’s one of many Eastern Iowans under attack by a recent surge of critters and bugs.

Goldsmith said in his case, it’s moles, “You can just see the way they’re digging, its like a trail, but their underground instead of on the top.”

Many other homes have raccoons going crazy. Rick Miller with Critter Control said the young coons have gotten a little older and are being more active, probably following mother.

“We are seeing a lot of bugs lately,” said Derek Wetlaufer, Springer Pest Solutions.

Wetlaufer said all the wet, humid and hot weather is bug heaven, “It’s perfect conditions for them to breed.”

And with more insects, especially grubs, moles and other critters are having a feast.

“Four or five years ago there was a lot of earwigs. And then they went away for whatever reason – and then wham, they’re back and it’s the number one thing we’re contending with right now,” said Wetlaufer.

Wetlaufer said the best way to get rid of earwigs is to remove moisture. In basements, he said use a dehumidifier and move boxes away from walls and off of floors.

Outside, Wetlaufter said you should rake or turnover mulch or leaves that might be sitting next to or near a home.

He said there are also chemical options, but the number one prevention is to reduce we hiding spots for the bugs.
