Fall Perfect Time For Rodent Infestations

Fall is the time of year when many people will be working to get their homes ready for winter.

It's important to pay attention to the critters trying to get in.

Pests in your home are not only a nuisance, they can gnaw on electrical wiring, causing fires and they can spread diseases.

"We've had mice. We've had bats. We've had bees. We've had yellow jackets. Squirrels were the biggest issue," said Ron Brusadin, an area resident.

Those critters invaded Brusadin's home during a three-year period. But with the help of Critter Control, they may have found a solution.

"Right now, we are in pretty good shape. For the last few months, we haven't had any issues to deal with," Brusadin said.

"No matter what type of animal gets into homes, they typically make some type of sound," said Jeremy Chester, with Critter Control.

Those sounds coming from the attic highlighted open vents that Critter Control fixed by using roof vent guards and screens.

"A mouse only needs roughly about a quarter-inch gap to enter into a home or get into anything," Chester said.

Squirrels will try to get inside buildings in the fall and winter, looking for shelter.

"Their primary goal is to find a nice, safe, warm spot for the winter time," Chester said.

Critter Control said residents should keep wood piles and bird feeders as far from homes as possible, and pick up nuts and other food sources so yards are not inviting to animals.

"It's a challenge, but I guess when you own a house, that is one of the issues you have to deal with," Brusadin said.

Experts said droppings, gnaw marks or paw prints near downspouts are signs that animals may be looking for entry points.
